Facial cosmetic acupuncture is a popular cosmetic treatment that is considered to be a safer alternative to surgery and Botox. This treatment addresses signs of aging by naturally helping the skin look younger and smoother, while also improving skin health. Below, our cosmetic acupuncture specialist, Grace Kim, MSTOM, LAc, answers frequently asked questions about this procedure.

How does cosmetic acupuncture work?

“Cosmetic acupuncture starts off with a regular full body acupuncture treatment to increase blood flow to the facial region. Then, facial acupuncture points are stimulated with silicone coated painless needles on the facial area, especially on the patient’s main concern areas, such as under the eyes, wrinkles on the forehead, etc.”

Can you get cosmetic acupuncture done by any acupuncturist?

“No. Cosmetic acupuncture is a specialized acupuncture technique. General acupuncturists do not learn this in the course of their school curriculum. Patients should look for an acupuncturist with a special cosmetic or facial rejuvenation certification for cosmetic acupuncture.”

How many needles are involved?

“As regular body acupuncture treatment varies in the number of needles, it is same for cosmetic acupuncture. It always depends on patient’s condition or primary concerned areas.”

Do you see results immediately?

“You do not see the results immediately. This is really important to remember. It is not a surgery or any additives injected in your facial area. This is instead a holistic and natural treatment, which requires the body to treat itself slowly. However, some patients see the facial complexion change within 24-48 hours after treatment, which is known as a Facial Glow.”

How many sessions are needed?

“It all depends on the specific patient, but in general, consistent 8-10 sessions are required to see the change. Please keep in mind that twice a week for 4-5 weeks are required during the initial stage and for maintenance, it is recommended to come back for a treatment once a month.”
