“BIG” Moves for a BIG Impact: How LSVT BIG Helps Parkinson’s Disease
Feeling smaller, slower, or stiffer than you used to?
If you or a loved one is living with Parkinson’s Disease, you may have noticed that everyday movements feel harder—walking, reaching for an object, or getting out of a chair.
These changes aren’t just frustrating—they’re part of how Parkinson’s affects the brain and body.
That’s where LSVT BIG comes into play.
At The Spine & Health Center of New Jersey, we provide specialized rehabilitation programs for individuals with Parkinson’s, including LSVT BIG, to help restore confident, purposeful movement.
What Is LSVT BIG?
LSVT BIG is a specialized physical and occupational therapy program designed specifically for people with Parkinson’s Disease.
It focuses on retraining the brain and body to move with:
- Increased power
- Improved accuracy
- Better cadence with walking
- Greater independence in daily activities
LSVT stands for Lee Silverman Voice Treatment. While it originally began as a speech therapy program (LSVT LOUD), the principles were adapted for physical movement—resulting in LSVT BIG.
LSVT BIG is commonly delivered through physical therapy and occupational therapy working together to address whole-body movement and daily function.
Why Do Parkinson’s Patients Move Differently?
Parkinson’s Disease affects how the brain sends signals to the muscles, which can lead to:
- Slower movement (bradykinesia)
- Smaller steps while walking
- Postural changes and stiffness
- Difficulty with coordination and dual-task activities
Over time, these symptoms can increase fall risk and limit independence.
LSVT BIG helps reset the brain’s internal “movement scale,” training patients to recognize and produce larger, more effective movements during everyday tasks.
What Does LSVT BIG Look Like in the Clinic?
At SHC, our LSVT BIG–certified therapists guide patients through a structured, evidence-based program that includes:
- High-amplitude, full-body movements (big steps, big reaches, big turns)
- Functional tasks such as walking, standing from a chair, dressing, and reaching
- Intensive one-on-one sessions, 4 times per week for 4 weeks
Each program is individualized and goal-driven. Whether your goal is walking with more confidence, gardening, driving, or keeping up with grandkids, therapy is tailored to what matters most to you.
LSVT BIG may also be combined with balance training and mobility work provided through physical therapy to further reduce fall risk.
Who Can Benefit from LSVT BIG?
LSVT BIG is most effective for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease who:
- Are newly diagnosed or in the early to middle stages
- Notice changes in walking, balance, or posture
- Want to remain active, independent, and safe
- Are motivated to practice consistently at home
Even individuals with more advanced symptoms may benefit when the program is appropriately modified.
Why Start Now?
Earlier intervention leads to better long-term outcomes.
LSVT BIG has been shown to:
- Improve walking speed and stride length
- Increase stability while reducing fall risk
- Restore confidence with everyday activities
- Enhance overall quality of life
Starting early helps preserve function and maintain independence for as long as possible.
